Peaceful, rustic Berkeley is a charming fishing community where life is sweet and the people friendly. All that is about to change. After losing her childhood farm to the bank, local beauty Rene decides to leave town and head for the big city. Suddenly, an
avalanche of meteorites races through the sky, bombarding the town and bringing an otherworldly infection. Departing is going to be much more difficult than she had planned. The living dead are awakened and Rene is now caught in a nightmare of zombies hungry
for human flesh. She manages to find salvation in a small isolated farm house owned by the town loony, Marion. There she is met with four other desperate survivors. Together they battle their way through a plague of walking dead and discover that there is
more transpiring than just an infection. Rene, a small-time beauty queen, is forced to move out of her hometown of Berkeley, a sleepy town in Queensland, due to financial problems. However, barely had she started the journey when meteors start raining down
from the sky, turning all those hit into zombies. In an attempt to escape, she stumbles upon a small group of survivors, and together, they must fight their way out of town. However, one of the survivors firmly believes it is more than just a simple zombie
outbreak--it is part of a bigger conspiracy. Peter Jackson has created his disciples. Here, the aussie tradition of zombie movies is continued, in a film that again deals with aliens and semi-human people, this time with a twist. A meteor shower falls over
the fishing community of Berkeley. Thereon, it's a matter of life and death and the survivors try to fight their way out, guided by a charismatic gunman who is determined to escape, and seems to know something the others don't. The movie's refusal to take
itself seriously gives this never-stopping comedy action fest a feel and a look that will make every zombie fan love it. Sporting spectacular moments and really cool concepts, this a must-see! The story: A comet turns people in Berkeley, Australia into flesh-eating
zombies. One man knows how to save everyone. He does it with an endless supply of guns, some great moves and sidekicks that include a potty-mouth cop and a pregnant woman. Oh, and aliens, of course.
Summed up in one word: Promise. The creators of this film show "promise". They made a stellar film with no budget - great story, great acting, and special effects that should be impossible with home computers. Give them a few million for their next film and
we might see the masterpiece of the decade.
Now, any film with zombies, lots of blood, aliens and an Australian feel has to be compared to the two Peter Jackson classics "Dead Alive" and "Bad Taste". This film is right in line to join them. I wouldn't call it better, I wouldn't call it worse. The effects
are better, but at the same time there's something more long-lasting in the Jackson films. But you'll see some parallels. One scene with a saw blade on a stick reminded me of the lawnmower scene from "Dead Alive".
But it can be summed up like this: if you like blood flying around and you like zombies... you have no excuse. See this film, it will definitely be something worth chatting about with your macabre friends over a cup of coffee. Watching it is a smidgen like
listening to the same monkey-walks-into-a-bar joke for the 105th time, but for the Spierig brothers, it is clearly a demonstration of fast-cheap capabilities and a one-way ticket straight out of Queensland. Or visit the highly premature "Daybreakers" page
